Mass in St Anne’s – New Year’s Day 2007

     Each year since 1968 successive Popes have issued a special message for New Year’s Day celebrating World Day of Peace.  They comprise a wonderful corpus of teaching addressed to Governments, to leaders and nations and to all men and women of goodwill.  The Church, in the person of successive Popes has always been and is a powerful voice for peace.  

            The title of this year’s message is “The Human Person: The Heart of Peace” and the basic message of Pope Benedict XVI is stated very clearly.  “I am convinced that respect for the person promotes peace and that in building peace the foundations are laid for an authentic integral humanism . . . a true and stable peace presupposes respect for human rights”.  And so the Pope calls on every follower of Christ to “be committed to tireless peace-making and the strenuous defence of the dignity of the human person and his inalienable rights”.
